With the Appenzeller Cheesesteak Sandwich, we offer a delicious variation of the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. This American classic is usually composed of beef, bell pepper, onions and American cheese. Replacing it with wonderful Appenzeller Cheese is bringing this Sandwich to heaven! And with 4 maturations of Appenzeller it is even higher: 3 months, 5 months, 6 months or 9 months, as you like it! Better eat the whole sandwich alone if you want to taste them all. The rest of the ingredients comes from the original: beef, bell pepper, onions and a lot of Worcestersauce.
Ingredients
- 2 medium onions
- 1 green bell pepper
- 400g sirloin beef (or other cuts)
- 200g Appenzeller (we used 4 different maturations)
- Worcester sauce
- two small submarine breads
- vegetable oil
- salt, pepper to taste
Directions
Preheat your oven to 200 C and butterfly your bread: cut it along the lenght but not entirely through. Open it, eventually brush a bit of olive oil on two sides and put in the oven for 5 minutes, until crispy. It will avoid the bread to get soaked with juice.
Take out your meat from the fridge and cut into thin slices. Leave to room temperature and slice the onions and green pepper as well.
On low heat, pan the onion with a bit of oil, and add the green pepper. Cook until slightly caramelized. Turn up the heat, add meat, salt, pepper and worcester sauce to taste. When the beef is nicely browned, lower the heat, taste the seasoning to eventually correct it and form a line in your pan. It needs to be approximatively the size of your bread.
For the cheese we used 4 different maturations of Appenzeller Cheese, and topped our meat with those, one after another in the right order, so that the cheese becomes more intensive along the bites. It was really an amazing experience. If you find only one kind of Appenzeller though, it’s already great.
Cut it into thick slices, with the same width than your bread, and put them directly onto your meat. The heat from the pan will let it melt.
